Ah, this is more like it.

William Carvalho and Nandez are literally scrapping for it on the floor, more reminiscent of a rugby ruck than the beautiful game. Still, you cannot fault the commitment.

7:40pm

38 mins: Uruguay 1 Portugal 0

Both teams fighting hard. The first signs of the game getting tetchy. Cáceres and João Mário at it down by the corner flag.

7:39pm

37 mins: Uruguay 1 Portugal 0

Godin puts the nut on Gonçalo Guedes as they go up for a ball. Accidentally, like.

7:39pm

35 mins: Uruguay 1 Portugal 0

Luis Suarez switches wings, links with Nandez on the overlapping right. Decent cross. Bentancur can't do anything with it.

Bitty, broken up the game. Bentantcur has fouled Gonçalo Guedes centrally, shoved him with no real effort to win the ball. Here's Ronaldo.

Into the wall. Didn't get hold of it.

Ronaldo's popped up on the right wing but there's no room there either. Nandez blocks off Guerreiro.

7:30pm

28 mins: Uruguay 1 Portugal 0
Here's Bernardo. Portugal putting together a move. Uruguay is extremely impressive with their press and discipline. The move is snuffed out.
7:27pm

26 mins: Uruguay 1 Portugal 0
I would say Portugal have had a bit more of the ball but URG looks slightly slicker and more dangerous coming forward. Cavani the best on the pitch, dangerous but also dropping back to make a midfield five and getting through a lot of work.
7:26pm

24 mins: Uruguay 1 Portugal 0

Bernardo Silva has been getting on the ball, which is encouraging for Portugal. He's fouled as he breaks down the right. Bentancur the aggressor. Freekick is cleared easily enough.

7:23pm

21 mins: Uruguay 1 Portugal 0

Fonte has bundled Suarez over, giving the Bitey One a chance from a freekick. Central. Drilled low through the wall, Rui Patricio sees it late but gets behind it. Lucky for him the rebound doesn't go to an opponent. Suarez eventually, speculatively, tries to hook it back in.

7:20pm

18 mins: Uruguay 1 Portugal 0

Ronaldo cuts it from the left, seemingly the entire URG team chasing him. Eventually, reluctantly, as a matter of last resort, he passes.

Now a ball in from the right by? Guedes. Giménez with an important intercepting header, Ronaldo was a-lurking.

7:17pm

15 mins: Uruguay 1 Portugal 0

Good work from Adrien Silva but Pereira's cross from the right is weak. Other than that moment of brilliance from Cavani-Suarez-Cavani, both sides' delivery has been so-so, from open play and dead balls.

7:15pm

13 mins: Uruguay 1 Portugal 0

Cavani, who is one of those players for me where I watch him in Champions League and cannot see what the fuss is about, but he's at it tonight. He bullies the POR defense, pinches it, and frees Suarez. Luis is outnumbered though and has to settle for a corner.

7:14pm

12 mins: Uruguay 1 Portugal 0

Ronaldo pulls out wide, makes space, and crunches a shot at goal. Torreira blocks it, not that he had a choice. And that seems to have started.

7:12pm

10 mins: Uruguay 1 Portugal 0

Chance for Portugal to hit back! Nicely worked corner from the right, and it's played deep to the back stick where Fonte gets up powerfully to nod it across the area... but nobody can capitalize.

7:09pm

GOAL! Uruguay 1 Portugal 0 (Cavani 7)

Wonderful vision from Cavani as he plays a crossfield ball out to his mate Suarez on the left wing and makes a run to the right-hand post. Suarez cuts inside and delivers a peach of a cross. Cavani pulls away from the markers and he has headed it in. Two magnificent passes. The header itself, funnily enough, seemed to come off his throat or chest - he slightly mistimed the jump. They deserved that bit of luck for the two pinpoint balls.
7:06pm

5 mins: Uruguay 0 Portugal 0

Ronaldo is teed up on the edge of the area and hits a crisp first-timer.... straight at the keeper. URG have kept SIX consecutive clean sheets.

7:04pm

4 mins: Uruguay 0 Portugal 0

Nández with a one-two involving Suarez. Gets to the byline and crosses. Corner. Pepe and Godin are grapplin'. The ref has a word. The corner comes to nothing.

Portugal, in fact, breaks from it... Torreira barges Ronaldo to the floor.

7:03pm

2 mins: Uruguay 0 Portugal 0

The ref gets the first of one million users out of that whistle. Ball pumped forward by URG, Cavani hunting it, is correctly adjudged to have shoved Pepe.

And we have now had our first attempt on goal. POR down the left, deep cross, Bernardo Silva attempts the header but he's a long way from goal and cannot direct it.

7:01pm

1 mins: Uruguay 0 Portugal 0

It is Portugal, in their white, who kick off.

URG, you will go on my first whistle. Lovely busy affair. Very long intro. Godin does not have the voice of an angel, you will be surprised to hear. And he looks such a choirboy.

Cesar Ramos: what a game to ref!

"This will be a busy evening for the referee, not least with Uruguay's Atletico Madrid center-halves Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez up against Portugal's Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo," said Mark Lawrenson.

The great shame that Lawro not on co-comms for this.

6:27pm

As for URG

Jose Maria Gimenez is back in Uruguay's starting lineup for the round of 16 games against Portugal at the World Cup.

Gimenez missed the last group-stage match against Russia with a thigh injury but returned to practice this week and takes his place in the starting lineup next to Atletico Madrid teammate Diego Godin.

Uruguay is the only team in the tournament who got through the groups without conceding.

6:23pm

I make that 3 changes for POR

Cristiano Ronaldo will lead the team but midfielder Joao Moutinho remains out of the starting lineup. Moutinho started on the bench against Iran due to flu-like symptoms.

Ricardo Pereira (Porto) Goncalo Guedes (Valencia) and Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silvacome get into the side. Cedric, Quaresma, and Adrien Silva the unlucky ones.
6:20pm

The teams

Uruguay: Muslera, Caceres, Gimenez, Godin, Laxalt, Nandez, Torreira, Vecino, Bentancur, Suarez, Cavani. Subs: Campana, Varela, Sanchez, Rodriguez, De Arrascaeta, Stuani, Gaston Silva, Maxi Pereira, Gomez, Coates, Urreta, Martin Silva.

Portugal: Rui Patricio, Ricardo Pereira, Pepe, Fonte, Guerreiro, Bernardo Silva, William Carvalho, Adrien Silva, Joao Mario, Goncalo Guedes, Ronaldo. Subs: Lopes, Bruno Alves, Fernandes, Joao Moutinho, Andre Silva, Dias, Bruno Fernandes, Gelson Martins, Mario Rui, Quaresma, Cedric, Beto.

The teams

Could equally apply to CR7...
5:45pm

The winner of this match

will play France in the quarter-finals and I think it is fair to say that whichever of URG and POR wins, they will be second favourite against Mbappe and amis. As has been widely discussed, this draw is mad lopsided. No question whatsoever that this is the harder side. England have had a stroke of luck.
