Diabetes Information To Keep You In The Know

Diabetes is a serious disease that happens when your blood sugar, blood glucose, is too high. The blood glucose in your body is the primary source of energy and you receive this energy when you eat different types of food. Your pancreas makes a hormone called insulin that assists your cells to receive the glucose from the food. Some people do not make enough insulin or their body may not use the insulin that they make very well. In both of these occurrences the glucose will remain in your blood without reaching your cells.

Over a period of time, anyone who continues to have too much glucose in the blood will often experience serious health problems. Diabetes does not have a cure but there are ways to manage your diabetes and have a healthy lifestyle.

Type I Diabetes Information

People who suffer from type I diabetes have a body that does not make insulin. Their immune system attacks and destroys the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. Type I diabetes can appear at any age but it is normally diagnosed in young adults and children. Anyone who has type I diabetes will need to have an insulin injection every day.

Type II Diabetes Information

People who suffer from type II diabetes have a body that either does not make or utilize insulin well. Type II diabetes can occur at any age including children. However, type II diabetes is most common in middle-aged or people who are older. It is also common for those who are overweight, inactive, eat poorly, or have family members who are diabetic.

Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes may develop in a woman that is pregnant. In the majority of cases, this type of diabetes will disappear after the baby is born. However, women who have had gestational diabetes will often also have a greater chance of acquiring type II diabetes later in life.

Facts

Only a few years ago, there were over 30 million people in the United States who suffered from diabetes. This is an amazing 9% of the population. Another amazing statistic is that 1 out of every 4 did not even realize that they had the disease.

Issues

There are many serious health issues that can occur for anyone who has high blood glucose levels over a long period of time. Some of these issues include stroke, heart disease, nerve damage, dental disease, foot problems, eye problems, and kidney disease.

Prevention

The good news is that there are ways to delay or even prevent type II diabetes. You can delay or prevent type II diabetes by adhering to a calorie reduced eating plan, losing a modest amount of weight, and becoming physically active for most days of the week.

Reduce the size of your daily food portions so that you can reduce the amount of calories you consume. This will help you to also lose weight. Drink plenty of water and try to avoid all sweetened beverages including fruit juices. Choose a balanced diet consisting of nutritious carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.

Your best chance for delaying or preventing type II diabetes is to immediately make the appropriate lifestyle changes.
