Joseph Smith, prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, claimed to have translated the golden plates through the power of God. According to his testimony, these plates contained an ancient record written in a language called “Reformed Egyptian” and were delivered to him in 1827 by an angelic being named Moroni.

To carry out the translation, Joseph Smith stated that along with the plates, he received a special instrument known as the Urim and Thummim, which consisted of two transparent stones mounted in a frame similar to a pair of spectacles. With the help of this sacred instrument, he claimed to be able to interpret the characters written on the plates and translate them into English.

This translation process took place mainly between April and June of 1829, being completed in approximately three months, which believers consider a miracle due to the complexity of the text. Finally, in 1830, the Book of Mormon was published as a new sacred scripture that complements the Bible. For the followers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, this event is seen as a manifestation of divine power, while critics have debated the nature of the translation process. However, beyond differing opinions, the story of the translation of the golden plates remains a central element in the faith of millions of people today.
