MARCOS REACTS TO CLAIM ON SENATE LEADERSHIP

MARCOS REACTS TO CLAIM ON SENATE LEADERSHIP

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. responded with laughter after being asked about Senator Rodante Marcoleta’s claim that Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano’s leadership was supposedly the first in Senate history to be chosen without the influence or blessing of MalacaƱang.

According to President Marcos, the selection of the Senate President is not decided by the Palace, but by the senators themselves. He emphasized that, as a former senator, he understands that the Senate has its own internal process when choosing its leader.

“The Senate President is decided by the senators themselves,” Marcos said during a press briefing on May 29.

He also rejected the idea that the President can simply dictate who the senators should vote for.

“Is he implying that I somehow choose the Senate President? You ask any senator, ask me as a former senator, I will laugh in your face because that’s simply not true,” the President explained.

This issue highlights an important point in Philippine politics: the Senate is a separate and independent branch of government. While political alliances and influence may exist, the official power to elect the Senate President belongs to the senators.

Meanwhile, Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano cited Marcoleta’s statement to counter public criticism that the Senate has become “chaotic” under his leadership.

Note:
In the Philippine Senate, the Senate President is elected by a majority vote of the senators. The position is important because the Senate President presides over sessions, helps manage legislative priorities, and plays a major role in maintaining order and direction within the chamber.
