An emotional father-and-son conversation was shared by Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte after he acknowledged the possibility of being imprisoned and never returning to his hometown.
A FATHER PREPARING HIS SON FOR AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE
It is never easy for a father to tell his child that there may come a time when he will no longer be able to return home.
This was the deeply personal message shared by Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte as he recalled a serious conversation with his eldest son before leaving Davao City.
According to the mayor, he explained to his son that he might face imprisonment and might never return to their hometown. However, before anything unexpected happens, he wanted his child to hear his side of the story directly from him.
“I might go to prison and then I might not come back to Davao. So, you just have to know that I did nothing wrong.”
Through these words, Mayor Baste expressed his firm belief that he had done nothing wrong, despite the possible challenges awaiting him.
“THEY CANNOT SCARE US. IT’S IMPOSSIBLE.”
Mayor Baste’s statements were not limited to his conversation with his son.
He also strongly emphasized that he would not allow fear or intimidation to influence his decisions.
“They cannot scare us. It’s impossible.”
For the mayor, the possibility of imprisonment is not a reason to abandon his principles or surrender his convictions.
However, his statement does not mean that any wrongdoing has been established or that imprisonment is certain. Any allegations must be examined through the proper legal process.
THE TRUE PURPOSE OF ENTERING POLITICS
Mayor Baste also explained his personal understanding of what it means to be a public servant.
“Fundamentally, the reason being in politics is to contribute to your society.”
In other words, he believes politics should primarily focus on serving the people and making meaningful contributions to society.
At the same time, he criticized the current administration, accusing it of unnecessarily complicating matters because of what he described as greed.
“Apparently, this administration is really complicating everything with their greed.”
These remarks reflect Mayor Baste’s personal opinion and allegations, which should not be treated as established facts without supporting evidence.
BEYOND POLITICS: A FATHER’S MESSAGE TO HIS SON
For me, the most powerful part of Mayor Baste’s statement was not his criticism of the administration.
It was the moment he had to speak to his own child about the possibility of never returning home.
Behind every political figure is a family that may also be affected by controversies, investigations, and political conflicts.
People may have different opinions about the Duterte family. Some remain strong supporters, others are critics, while many prefer to wait for clearer evidence before reaching conclusions.
Regardless of our political beliefs, however, every individual deserves fairness, justice, and due process.
MY PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE
True courage is not measured by powerful words alone.
It is also demonstrated through the willingness to stand by the truth, answer difficult questions, face challenges, and accept responsibility when wrongdoing has been proven.
If allegations are raised against any government official, they should be investigated fairly, impartially, and based on credible evidence.
The law should never become an instrument of political revenge. At the same time, political power and popularity should never serve as protection against accountability.
Ultimately, truth and justice must prevail — not fear, political influence, or personal interests.
A father may be a public official, a political leader, or a controversial figure, but he is still a parent who wants his children to understand his side of the story.
And sometimes, the most difficult conversations are not delivered before a crowd or inside a government institution.
They happen privately, between a father and his child.

ISANG AMA NA NAGHAHANDA SA ANUMANG POSIBILIDAD
Hindi madaling sabihin ng isang ama sa kanyang anak na maaaring dumating ang panahong hindi na siya makauwi.
Ito ang mabigat na mensaheng ibinahagi ni Mayor Baste Duterte tungkol sa naging pag-uusap nila ng kanyang panganay na anak bago siya umalis ng Davao City.
Ayon sa alkalde, ipinaliwanag niya sa kanyang anak na maaari siyang makulong at posibleng hindi na makabalik. Ngunit bago mangyari ang anumang hindi inaasahan, nais niyang marinig mismo ng kanyang anak ang kanyang panig.

Ito ay ang sandaling kinailangan niyang kausapin ang sariling anak tungkol sa posibilidad na hindi na siya makabalik sa kanilang tahanan.
Sa likod ng bawat politiko ay mayroon ding pamilyang maaaring maapektuhan ng mga kontrobersiya, imbestigasyon, at tunggaliang pampolitika.
Maaari tayong magkaroon ng magkakaibang pananaw tungkol sa mga Duterte. May mga sumusuporta, may mga tumututol, at mayroon ding naghihintay ng mas malinaw na ebidensya bago humusga.
Ngunit anuman ang ating paniniwala, mahalagang igalang ang karapatan ng bawat tao sa patas na proseso.
ANG AKING PANANAW
Ang tunay na katapangan ay hindi lamang nasusukat sa matatapang na salita. Nakikita rin ito sa kahandaang panindigan ang katotohanan, humarap sa mga tanong, at tanggapin ang pananagutan kapag may napatunayang pagkakamali.
Kung may mga alegasyon laban sa sinumang opisyal ng gobyerno, nararapat lamang na imbestigahan ang mga ito nang patas, walang kinikilingan, at batay sa ebidensya.
Hindi dapat maging instrumento ng paghihiganti ang batas, ngunit hindi rin dapat maging panangga laban sa pananagutan ang kapangyarihan o kasikatan.
Sa huli, ang katotohanan at hustisya ang dapat manaig — hindi takot, impluwensya, o pansariling interes.
