How It All Started: VP Sara Duterte Impeachment
The impeachment issue against Vice President Sara Duterte did not begin overnight. It started from several controversies involving allegations of misuse of public funds, questions about confidential funds, unexplained wealth, and alleged threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Marcos, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez. VP Sara Duterte has denied the accusations and has described the impeachment move as politically motivated.
The first major impeachment push happened in 2025, but the Supreme Court later ruled that the complaint was unconstitutional because of the one-year bar rule and due process issues. The Court clarified that its ruling did not clear Duterte of the allegations; it only stopped that particular impeachment case from moving forward.
After the one-year restriction period passed, the issue returned to the House of Representatives. On May 11, 2026, lawmakers voted again to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte, with reports saying the vote reached around 255–257 House members, enough to send the case to the Senate for trial.

Now, the impeachment case moves to the Senate, where senators will sit as judges in an impeachment trial. If convicted, VP Sara Duterte could be removed from office and barred from holding public office in the future.

But for now, the case remains a political and legal battle, and the final decision will depend on the Senate trial.
