Homesick For Eternal Home

There’s a reason we feel out of place and uncomfortable in life sometimes.

Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles discusses how every eternal being has a deep-rooted longing to return to our heavenly home. In the accompanying article, the author shares her own feelings about her homesickness for that same eternal home.

I was the poster child for homesickness.

When I was small, despite the fun I would be having at slumber parties, there always came a point in the night when I would call my parents, asking to go home while the rest of my friends slept soundly. I remember nights when I would be giggling with my friends while playing hide-and-seek and eating too much pizza and chocolate licorice, only to feel a deep anxiety settle into my chest when I noticed the sun disappearing outside and how “far away” from home I seemed to be. Fun fact: most of these sleepovers took place only about five minutes away from my house (luckily I can laugh about it now).

Interestingly enough, I still get homesick. Sure, I like to travel as much as the next young adult, but after a few days of exploring a new city, there is nothing quite like returning to the comfort and familiarity I can find only at home. But lately, with my life being filled with making never-ending to-do lists, worries about the future, and exhaustion that never seems to go away, I’ve again noticed that same deep-rooted anxiety I used to feel as a child when I was away from home. Which confused me at first, because how could I possibly feel homesick within my home? But one day I finally realized what this odd feeling is: It’s homesickness for my real home. My eternal home.

Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles recently spoke about this sort of homesickness, saying: “I believe that every man, woman, and child has felt the call of heaven at some point in his or her life. Deep within us is a longing to somehow reach past the veil and embrace Heavenly Parents we once knew and cherished.”

Sometimes I forget that this earth is our temporary home. We are spiritual beings on a mortal journey. We’ve never done this before! No wonder we feel so lost and awkward and freaked out from time to time. We are here on a journey to return to our true home. When you think about it that way (and when you realize that this extended time on earth is not meant to be as much fun as a vacation at the beach), it’s only natural that we all long to go back to our Heavenly Father.

I think we feel this homesickness for our eternal home especially when we try to do our best and see minimum results, when we face certain trials that never seem to end, and when we are completely exhausted and overwhelmed from everything life throws at us. Sometimes it feels like just as I manage to take a step forward, some crazy situation or mistake flips me around and pushes me back in the opposite direction! And that can make my eternal home seem farther away than ever.

That’s when I have to remember.

I have to step back, breathe, and remember who I am, where I am, and where I will be someday if I keep moving forward on the path of discipleship. I have to remember that this life is a mere speck on the time line of eternity. I have to remember that Heavenly Father once told me that this temporary home would be filled with sorrow and confusion and challenges, but if I would keep going even when things got hard, I could make it back to Him. I have to remember that the Savior can help me overcome my weaknesses and move on. I have to remember that I chose to come here because this short separation from the comfort of my Heavenly Father that allows me to grow, better myself, and become like Him will be worth everything.

I can’t even fathom the indescribable joy, familiarity, and peace I will feel when I am reunited with my Heavenly Parents. But until then, I’ll treat this temporary home for what it is: a privilege. This life is meant to be a test. We need to be patient with ourselves because this is a new experience for all of us. And though our homesickness for our eternal home may always be deep within our hearts, we don’t have to feel lost or alone. Living the gospel of Jesus Christ can give us a small taste of that peace our eternal home will someday bring us. The gospel can give us hope to keep moving forward, and it is the key to finding our way back.

Just as I knew I could call my parents for help whenever I felt homesick, I know that Heavenly Father is only a prayer away. He wants to help us. He wants us to return to Him. And because of that, we can take comfort in knowing that as we seek Him, He will bring us one step closer to home. As Elder Uchtdorf taught: “When you walk the path of discipleship—when you move toward Heavenly Father—there is something within you that will confirm that you have heard the call of the Savior and set your heart toward the light. It will tell you that you are on the right path and that you are returning home.”

Why did God Allow Polygamy in the Bible?

The Polygamy in the Bible

The practice of having multiple spouses has been the subject of much debate and discussion over the centuries, with varying opinions and interpretations.

This article explores the history of polygamy in the Bible, from the Old Testament through the New Testament, and considers its cultural and social significance.

We will examine the place of this complex and controversial issue within the broader biblical tradition as we delve into this complex and controversial topic.

Polygamy in Human Society

Human societies have a long and complex history of polygamy, the practice of having multiple spouses. Despite being associated with certain cultures and regions, such as Africa and the Middle East, polygamy has existed throughout history in many societies, including within the Bible.

Polygamy is mentioned numerous times in the Bible, both in the Old and New Testaments. While the holy text does not endorse or condemn the practice uniformly, interpretations of its meaning and significance have varied over time.

Polygamy in the Old Testment

According to the Bible, Adam and Eve were a complete marriage. As shown by the two in Eden, the ideal marriage proposed by Jesus in the New Testament is also monogamy.

Lamech’s story in Genesis is one of the earliest examples of polygamy in the Bible. Lamech took two wives, Adah and Zillah, and boasted about killing a man to them.

Scholars have interpreted this passage differently, some suggesting that it reflects a cultural practice at the time, while others see it as a condemnation of polygamy.

Abraham, Jacob, and David, who have multiple wives and concubines in the Old Testament, are often associated with polygamy.

Only Isaac had more than one wife among Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Ishmael was born to Abraham between Hagar, a female servant, and Sarah, who was unable to have children. Abraham’s son Isaac was born to his wife Sarah later on.

Jacob wanted Rachel as his wife, but his uncle Laban deceived him and gave him Leah instead. Between the two wives, I have twelve sons.

It marks the beginning of the twelve Israelites. Israel is said to have faith in God, as well as envy, jealousy, and competition.

Relationships between wives and their children are often portrayed as complex and fraught with tension, with jealousy and rivalry.

In these cases, polygamy can be motivated by a desire for heirs, political alliances, or even personal preference.

Some biblical scholars argue that the Bible actually promotes monogamy as the ideal form of marriage despite these examples.

Adam and Eve are said to have been the first man and woman, and they are portrayed as being monogamous. Jesus himself refers to marriage as an institution between one man and one woman.

Polygamy in the New Testament

There are passages in the New Testament that suggest a preference for monogamy over polygamy. Paul writes that church leaders should be “the husbands of one wife” (1 Timothy 3:2), suggesting monogamy was the preferred form of marriage for early Christians.

Despite controversies and debates surrounding polygamy in the Bible, it remains a subject of ongoing interest and inquiry and an important part of its tradition.

We can gain a deeper understanding of this complex and controversial issue and its place within the broader history of human relationships by studying the historical and cultural contexts in which polygamy was practiced, as well as key biblical passages.

Both David and Solomon had wives and concubines. Solomon had a thousand concubines, according to the Bible.

During the Old Testament, polygamy was briefly tolerated, but only temporarily. Marriage problems arise when polygamy ignores the principle that husband and wife are one body.

David and Solomon sinned by their foreign wives, as were Abraham and Jacob. Monogamy. is the only way to avoid conflicts between time and family, as well as accurately explain Christ’s relationship with believers.

Having More Than One Best Friend is Okay

Best friends. We’ve all had one, or two or even three. They come and go, and if we’re lucky we’ve had a best friend for a really long time. And as life goes, you come across an abundance of people, or maybe just a few, that all mean so much to you in their own way. But, is having more than one best friend okay? If you already have a best friend, but consider another friend your best friend as well, does it really count?

The answer, if not obvious already, is yes. And here’s why.

All Friendships Are Different

Each friendship develops differently and they each have their own special moments. It’s the differences in the friendships that make each and every one of them so important, because none is like the other. Some friendships start off immediately while others take time to progress. And some friendships have their own traditions while others tend to go with the flow, but in the end they all matter. The way they started and what makes them different is what leads you to consider that person as your best friend.

All Friends Have Their Own Superpower

Believe it or not, friends have superpowers. It's not the kind of superpowers that you read in a comic or see in a movie, but it's more of the realistic kind of superpowers. The kind where they know exactly what to do when you are feeling sad or know what to say to encourage you when you are feeling doubtful. Having more than one best friend, you realize that each of them have their own superpower and not all are the same. And despite the differences in each of them though, you realize that their friendship along with their amazing superpowers are exactly what keeps you grounded.

Time Doesn’t Matter with Friendships

Friendships begin in all throughout our lives. You may have your high school best friend, but you may also have a college best friend. Just because you meet someone earlier or later than another doesn’t mean that their friendship doesn’t hold the same value. Yes, friendships take time to grow, but you will know if that new friend that you met a few months or so ago is your best friend. Not through how long you’ve known each other, but rather through the special moments that have tucked themselves deep inside your heart. A New York Times bestselling author called Dodinsky says, “There are friendships imprinted in our hearts that will never be diminished by time and distance.”

Despite the Different Friendships You Love Them All the Same

When you ask your parents who they love the most between you and your siblings and they respond with, “We love you all the same,” you might sigh and roll your eyes. But, when having more than one best friend, you begin to somewhat understand what they mean. Despite the different friendships, despite all the special moments shared within each friendship and despite the various superpowers your friends may have, you realize that you love them all the same. And that love is shown in their own special way.

But don’t forget, friendship is a two-way street. Make sure to show your best friends your own super powers and help them through their struggles. Let them know that they all mean a lot to you and show them that it's the differences that make them special.
