Now Let Us Rejoice

1. Now let us rejoice in the day of salvation.

Moroni’s Prophecy

Today, it is obvious that Moroni’s prophecy is fulfilled among the nations; but I invite each of us to sincerely reflect on his prophecy as it relates to our individual hearts. In your own heart, is Joseph Smith’s name had for good—a name of virtue, purity and righteousness? Or, is his name had for evil—a name of a questionable character or wavering inconsistency?

We live in a time when the character of Joseph Smith is under attack. The attacks against him come from every quarter—both flagrant attacks from outside the Church, and more subtle and deadly attacks from among some members within.

President Hinckley taught that now is a “day of fulfillment for the prophecy” recorded in Section 122 of the Doctrine and Covenants, wherein the Lord tells Joseph Smith that: "The ends of the earth shall inquire after thy name, and fools shall have thee in derision, and hell shall rage against thee; While the pure in heart, and the wise, and the noble, and the virtuous, shall seek counsel, and authority, and blessings constantly from under thy hand."

The devil knows that if he can only destroy the character of the Prophet Joseph Smith in our hearts, then we will be barred from the presence of God the Father and Jesus Christ.

Though Joseph’s life was taken at an early age, his testimony of the Eternal God and the risen Lord lives on with luster and eloquence. I look to him. I love him. I seek to follow him. I read his words, and they become the standards to be observed in guiding this great Church as it moves forward in fulfilling its eternal destiny. To slightly paraphrase the words of our wonderful hymn:

Great is his glory and endless his priesthood.

Ever and ever the keys he will hold.

Faithful and true, he has entered God’s kingdom,

Crowned in the midst of the prophets of old.

We have not seen the last of Joseph Smith. He is not merely a prophet of the past.

The Book of Mormon Witnesses


“And whether they were in the body or out of the body, they could not tell; for it did seem unto them like a transfiguration of them, that they were changed from this body of flesh into an immortal state, that they could behold the things of God” 3 Nephi 28:15

The Know

The combined testimonies of the Three and Eight Witnesses of the Book of Mormon provide powerful evidence of the Restoration. The Three Witnesses said they beheld the angel Moroni, who showed them the gold plates and other Nephite artifacts. They also heard a voice from heaven, declaring the truth of the Book of Mormon’s translation. In contrast, the Eight Witnesses viewed and handled the plates without any accompanying divine manifestations.

Throughout their lives, none of these eleven men ever denied their testimonies, which have been published in every edition of the Book of Mormon since 1830. Despite the consistency of the witnesses’ testimonies, some have questioned the reality of their experiences—especially the vision shown to the Three Witnesses.

Warren Parrish, while apostatizing from the Church in 1838, claimed that Martin Harris “has come out at last, and says he never saw the plates … except in vision” (emphasis added). Stephen Burnett, another dissenter, similarly represented Harris as saying that the three witnesses only saw the plates “in vision or imagination” (emphasis added). And John Murphy once interpreted David Whitmer as saying that his testimony was based only on spiritual “impressions.”In these and other cases, individuals have chosen to emphasize the visionary nature of the Three Witnesses’ shared experience in a way that questions its actual occurrence in reality.

The witnesses themselves, however, openly refuted such insinuations. Harris once declared, “No man ever heard me in any way deny … the administration of the angel that showed me the plates.” Whitmer likewise responded to Murphy’s statement by saying that what he had seen “was no Delusion” and that he had “never at any time, denied that testimony or any part thereof, which has so long since been published” in the Book of Mormon.

Questions about the reality of what the witnesses experienced must also be viewed in light of their other known statements. The following are just a sampling of affirmative declarations from the Three Witnesses, recorded at different times by various individuals, which emphasize the literalness and reality of their miraculous experience:

  1. “It was a clear, open beautiful day, far from any inhabitants, in a remote field, at the time we saw the record, of which it has been spoken, brought and laid before us, by an angel, arrayed in glorious light, ascend out of the midst of heaven. Now if this is human juggling—judge ye.”

Martin Harris

  1. “Just as sure as you see the Sun shining, Just as sure am I that I stood in [p.4] the presence of an Angel of God ... and saw him hold the Gold Plates in his Hands.”
  2. “Gentlemen, do you see that hand? Are you sure you see it? Are your eyes playing a trick or something? No. Well, as sure as you see my hand so sure did I see the angel and the plates.”

David Whitmer

  1. “I saw [the Nephite artifacts] just as plain as I see this bed (striking his hand upon the bed beside him), and I heard the voice of the Lord, as distinctly as I ever heard anything in my life.”
  2. “I was not under any hallucination, nor was I deceived! I saw with these eyes and I heard with these ears!”

If the witnesses were so adamant about the literal reality of what they had seen, why did some of their contemporaries conclude that their experience was more imagined than real? It seems that this confusion is mostly due to differing assumptions about the nature of spiritual or visionary experiences. Apparently, some people have assumed that if an experience is spiritual in nature, then it is the same as imagination, hallucination, fantasy, and other less than real perceptions. The witnesses, on the other hand, held no such belief. In fact, their understanding of their own visionary experience is consistent with what the scriptures themselves say about such things.

Speaking of one man’s visionary ascent into heaven, the Apostle Paul declared, “whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell” (2 Corinthians 12:3). Mormon expressed similar language concerning Jesus’ disciples who were caught up into heaven. He explained, “And whether they were in the body or out of the body, they could not tell; for it did seem unto them like a transfiguration of them, that they were changed from this body of flesh into an immortal state, that they could behold the things of God” (3 Nephi 28:15).

It appears that in order to behold the angel Moroni in his resurrected glory, the Three Witnesses were similarly transfigured. This adequately explains the various reports that they saw the plates with their “spiritual eyes.”At the same time, it accounts for the witnesses’ insistence that their experience was as real as everyday visual sensations, like looking at sunlight, a bed, or one’s own hand. As Whitmer once clarified, “Of course we were in the spirit when we had the view, for no man can behold the face of an angel, except in a spiritual view, but we were in the body also, and everything was as natural to us, as it is at any time.”

The Why

The Book of Mormon prophesies that God would call special witnesses to testify to its truth. The literal reality of their experiences is therefore no trivial thing. These divinely appointed witnesses help the Book of Mormon fulfill one of its primary purposes—to convince the world “that Jesus is the Christ, the Eternal God” (Title Page).

When viewed collectively, the witnesses’ published testimonies are favored by “an overwhelming preponderance of evidence.”Each of the relevant first-hand statements from members of the Three and Eight Witnesses reaffirm their original statements. In addition, the majority of second-hand or hearsay accounts of the witnesses’ statements—from friends, critics, and neutral observers alike—also support the witnesses published testimonies.

The hearsay reports that cast doubt on the reality of the witnesses’ experiences are, by far, in the minority. And, as has been demonstrated, the witnesses themselves sometimes went out of their way to correct such misrepresentations. As Richard L. Anderson put it, “The words of the witnesses do speak for themselves, after analysis clears away garbled versions of what somebody attributed to them.”

It’s also important to recognize that the differences between the experiences of the Three and Eight Witnesses provide mutually reinforcing testimonial evidence. Those who wish to characterize the visionary experience of the Three Witnesses as mere “imagination” or “impressions” (like Parrish, Burnett, and Murphy did) must face that fact that eight men testified, under ordinary circumstances, that they saw the plates and were even allowed to handle and heft them. On the other hand, those who assume the plates were merely fabricated or were perhaps a genuine artifact with no spiritual value, must face the miraculous and unwavering testimonies of the Three Witnesses. Terryl L. Givens has explained,

Taken together, the two experiences seemed calculated to provide an evidentiary spectrum, satisfying a range of criteria for belief. The reality of the plates was now confirmed by both proclamation from heaven and by empirical observation, through a supernatural vision and by simple, tactile experience, by the testimony of passive witnesses to a divine demonstration and by the testimony of a group of men actively engaging in their own unhampered examination of the evidence.

The historical evidence demonstrates that the witnesses themselves were convinced that their experiences were real—real enough to stake their very lives and reputations on them, real enough that they consistently reaffirmed their published testimonies throughout their lives, and real enough that several witnesses used their last days, and even their dying breaths, to testify of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon.

Yet, as persuasive as the testimonies of the Three and Eight Witnesses may be, the Lord doesn’t ask anyone to solely rely upon them. The prophet Moroni promised that if those who read the Book of Mormon will sincerely ask God with “real intent, having faith in Christ,” the Lord will give them their own witness of its truth “by the power of the Holy Ghost” (Moroni 10:4). The testimonies of the witnesses are meant to strengthen, not replace, the spiritual witness of the Book of Mormon that is promised to all who sincerely seek it.

The practice of having multiple spouses has been the subject of much debate and discussion over the centuries, with varying opinions and interpretations. 

This article explores the history of polygamy in the Bible, from the Old Testament through the New Testament, and considers its cultural and social significance. 

We will examine the place of this complex and controversial issue within the broader biblical tradition as we delve into this complex and controversial topic.

Polygamy in Human Society

Human societies have a long and complex history of polygamy, the practice of having multiple spouses. Despite being associated with certain cultures and regions, such as Africa and the Middle East, polygamy has existed throughout history in many societies, including within the Bible. 

Polygamy is mentioned numerous times in the Bible, both in the Old and New Testaments. While the holy text does not endorse or condemn the practice uniformly, interpretations of its meaning and significance have varied over time.

Polygamy in the Old Testment

According to the Bible, Adam and Eve were a complete marriage. As shown by the two in Eden, the ideal marriage proposed by Jesus in the New Testament is also monogamy.

Lamech’s story in Genesis is one of the earliest examples of polygamy in the Bible. Lamech took two wives, Adah and Zillah, and boasted about killing a man to them. 

Scholars have interpreted this passage differently, some suggesting that it reflects a cultural practice at the time, while others see it as a condemnation of polygamy.

Abraham, Jacob, and David, who have multiple wives and concubines in the Old Testament, are often associated with polygamy. 

Only Isaac had more than one wife among Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Ishmael was born to Abraham between Hagar, a female servant, and Sarah, who was unable to have children. Abraham’s son Isaac was born to his wife Sarah later on.

Jacob wanted Rachel as his wife, but his uncle Laban deceived him and gave him Leah instead. Between the two wives, I have twelve sons. 

It marks the beginning of the twelve Israelites. Israel is said to have faith in God, as well as envy, jealousy, and competition.

Relationships between wives and their children are often portrayed as complex and fraught with tension, with jealousy and rivalry. 

In these cases, polygamy can be motivated by a desire for heirs, political alliances, or even personal preference.

Some biblical scholars argue that the Bible actually promotes monogamy as the ideal form of marriage despite these examples. 

Adam and Eve are said to have been the first man and woman, and they are portrayed as being monogamous. Jesus himself refers to marriage as an institution between one man and one woman.

Polygamy in the New Testament

There are passages in the New Testament that suggest a preference for monogamy over polygamy. Paul writes that church leaders should be “the husbands of one wife” (1 Timothy 3:2), suggesting monogamy was the preferred form of marriage for early Christians.

Despite controversies and debates surrounding polygamy in the Bible, it remains a subject of ongoing interest and inquiry and an important part of its tradition. 

We can gain a deeper understanding of this complex and controversial issue and its place within the broader history of human relationships by studying the historical and cultural contexts in which polygamy was practiced, as well as key biblical passages.

Both David and Solomon had wives and concubines. Solomon had a thousand concubines, according to the Bible.

During the Old Testament, polygamy was briefly tolerated, but only temporarily. Marriage problems arise when polygamy ignores the principle that husband and wife are one body.

David and Solomon sinned by their foreign wives, as were Abraham and Jacob. Monogamy. is the only way to avoid conflicts between time and family, as well as accurately explain Christ’s relationship with believers.

Why Did The Book of Mormon Authors Use Colophons?

“And I know that the record which I make is true; and I make it with mine own hand; and I make it according to my knowledge.”

1 Nephi 1:3

The Know

Beginning with the pioneering work of Hugh Nibley, scholars have noticed that the Book of Mormon contains what are called colophons (from the Greek word kolofōn, meaning “summit,” “top,” or “finishing”). “In antiquity,” one scholar explained, “the beginning and/or the end of a literary text was often marked by colophons. The colophons as superscriptions and subscriptions contained various information about the published text (addressee, author, scribe, subject, chronological information, etc.).” Nephi’s introductory colophon is arguably the most notable example of its use in the Book of Mormon. After summarizing the contents of his record and identifying himself as both scribe and author of the text, Nephi began his account by affirming:

1). his good parentage and upbringing,

2). his education and scribal training, and 3). his reliability as an author (1 Nephi 1:1–3).

But Nephi was not the only Book of Mormon author to use colophons. Enos (Enos 1:1–2) and Mormon (Mormon 1:1) both begin their accounts with a colophon, while Jacob (Jacob 7:27) included a colophon at the conclusion of his record. Mormon also used colophons throughout his abridgement in order to introduce verbatim or near-verbatim quotations of various source texts.

Alma 5, for example, is prefaced with this introductory colophon: “The words which Alma, the High Priest according to the holy order of God, delivered to the people in their cities and villages throughout the land.” Likewise, Samuel the Lamanite’s prophecies to the Nephites recorded in Helaman 7–16 are introduced with a simple colophon identifying the author behind the text (Samuel) and a short summary of its contents.

The use of colophons to signal the beginning or end of a text is widely found in biblical, Egyptian, and Mesopotamian sources. The prophetic books of the Bible often begin with colophons which identify the prophet and briefly introduce the historical setting in which he was prophesying. For instance, the book of Isaiah begins: “The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah” (Isaiah 1:1).

Sometimes biblical colophons describe the prophecies as coming literally “by the hand” (bĕ yad) of the prophet (cf. Malachi 1:1Haggai 1:1), a feature shared in Mesopotamian texts to identify the copyist (“by the hand of so-and-so”) and in later Egyptian texts to indicate authorship (“written by his own hand”; cf. 1 Nephi 1:3).

As Nibley recognized, Nephi’s colophon at the beginning of his account shares striking similarities to the colophon found in an ancient Egyptian manuscript called the Bremner-Rhind Papyrus. Further similarities with Egyptian texts could be cited. Indeed, Egyptian literary texts very often end in either a short, formulaic colophon certifying that the text has been copied correctly or a longer colophon which also includes the identity of the scribe. Introductory prefaces to Egyptian literary texts likewise often include the name and titles of the writer or subject of the narrative. These and other considerations led Nibley to conclude that the type of colophon seen in 1 Nephi 1:1–3 is “highly characteristic of Egyptian compositions.”

The Why

Nephi said he wrote his record “in the language of [his] father, which consists of the learning of the Jews and the language of the Egyptians” (1 Nephi 1:2). This being the case, it is reasonable to expect that his writings should bear the marks of an ancient Judeo-Egyptian literary culture. Nephi’s use of colophons fulfills this expectation remarkably well. Inasmuch as there is clear evidence (unavailable in Joseph Smith’s day) for Egyptian influence on Jewish literary and scribal culture before and during Nephi’s time, this in turn reinforces the book’s historicity.

Besides this, learning to recognize colophons may assist readers in making sense of the Book of Mormon’s complex narratives. This is because colophons were used at strategic points in the text to help readers identify when certain sources are being cited, or when authorial voices are shifting from one to another (such as Mormon’s to Alma’s in Alma 5). As explained by LDS scholar John A. Tvedtnes, colophons “provide valuable clues to the process of writing and compiling the [Book of Mormon].”

The presence of colophons in the Book of Mormon forcefully testifies of the “great efforts made by its writers and editors to make the record as clear as possible.” As one whose soul “delight[ed] in plainness” (2 Nephi 25:4), it’s completely understandable, then, why Nephi would use colophons in his record, and why his prophetic and scribal descendants would follow suit.
